  • Family: Poaceae
  • Genus: Sorghum
  • Plant Type: Annual grain/forage

Description:

Black Sorghum is a striking and versatile heritage grain valued for its deep, dark seed heads and high nutritional content. The glossy black grains are rich in antioxidants and often used in specialty flours, health foods, and traditional recipes. The tall, resilient stalks—reaching up to 10 feet—also make it an attractive ornamental grass for gardens and landscapes. Hardy and drought-tolerant, Black Sorghum is an excellent choice for sustainable food production and natural displays.

Planting Instructions:

  • Soil & Location: Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Tolerates heat and drought once established but performs best in moderately fertile conditions.
  • Sowing: Sow seeds directly after the last frost when soil temperatures reach 60°F (15°C) or higher. Can be grown similarly to corn or millet.
  • Planting Depth & Spacing: Plant seeds about 1 inch deep and space plants 6–12 inches apart in rows 24–36 inches apart.
  • Watering: Maintain moisture during germination and early growth. Once mature, Black Sorghum is drought-resistant and requires minimal watering.
  • Care: Weed during early stages to prevent competition. Harvest when seed heads darken and harden. Stalks can also be used for decorative or craft purposes.

Black Sorghum combines beauty, nutrition, and resilience. Whether grown for grain, ornamental use, or sustainable agriculture, it’s a rewarding and visually stunning addition to any garden.
