The Fireweed, a striking perennial wildflower native across much of the Northern Hemisphere, is known for its tall spikes of vibrant pink-purple flowers and its remarkable ability to colonize disturbed ground. Exceptionally cold-hardy and well adapted to northern climates, Fireweed is an important native species in meadows, forest clearings, roadsides, and areas recovering after wildfire.

Species: Chamaenerion angustifolium (syn. Chamerion angustifolium, Epilobium angustifolium)
Family: Onagraceae
Genus: Chamaenerion
Plant Type: Herbaceous perennial wildflower
Zones: 2–7

Planting Instructions:

  • Cold stratification for 2–4 weeks can help promote consistent germination, although fresh seed may germinate without stratification.
  • Sow seeds on the surface of a moist, well-draining seed-starting medium or prepared soil.
  • Fireweed seeds are extremely small and require light for germination, so do not bury them deeply. Gently press the seeds into the soil surface.
  • Place in a location with full sun to partial shade and keep the soil consistently moist during germination.
  • Once established, Fireweed is vigorous and cold-hardy. Plants spread naturally by underground rhizomes and can form large colonies, so choose a planting location where they have room to spread.

Other Names: Rosebay willowherb, Great willowherb, Wickup, Blooming Sally, and Willow herb.
