Black Jawi Benzoin Resin (Styrax benzoin)

Black Jawi Benzoin is a naturally hardened aromatic resin harvested from the bark of the Styrax benzoin tree, native to the tropical forests of Indonesia, particularly Sumatra. When the tree is carefully incised, a fragrant balsamic sap slowly exudes and hardens into dark irregular resin pieces. These pieces are traditionally collected and used throughout Asia and the Middle East as a prized incense material.

This resin is often referred to as Black Jawi, Benjamin Gum, or simply Benzoin. Unlike lighter benzoin varieties that form pale tears, Black Jawi appears darker and more rugged due to the natural bark inclusions present during harvest. When heated, it releases a warm, rich aroma with sweet balsamic notes often compared to vanilla, caramel, and soft resinous woods.

Aroma Profile

  • Sweet balsamic fragrance
  • Warm vanilla-like undertones
  • Soft resinous and slightly smoky depth
  • Rich traditional incense character

Traditional Use

Benzoin resin has been used for centuries in traditional incense blends across Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Europe. It is commonly burned on charcoal or blended with other aromatic resins such as frankincense, myrrh, or damar to create complex incense compositions. In India the resin is often referred to as Sambhrani, where it has long been used as a fragrant household incense.

How To Use

Place a small piece of resin on a lit charcoal tablet in a heat-safe incense burner. As the resin gently melts, it releases its characteristic balsamic fragrance into the surrounding space. Because benzoin softens and melts when heated, using charcoal with a small layer of ash or sand beneath the resin can help regulate the burn.
