Red Benzoin Resin (Styrax benzoin)

Red Benzoin, sometimes referred to as Red Jawi, is a naturally aromatic resin derived from the Styrax benzoin tree native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. When the bark of the tree is carefully tapped, a fragrant balsamic sap slowly exudes and hardens into irregular resin pieces that are later collected and sorted.

This darker benzoin variety features warm reddish-brown tones caused by natural bark inclusions and oxidation during the curing process. When heated, the resin releases a rich balsamic fragrance with sweet vanilla-like undertones and soft resinous depth. Because of its pleasant aroma, benzoin has long been valued as a traditional incense ingredient and aromatic resin.

Aroma Profile

  • Sweet balsamic fragrance
  • Warm vanilla-like notes
  • Soft caramelized sweetness
  • Deep resinous undertones

Traditional Use

Benzoin resin has been widely used throughout Asia, the Middle East, and Europe as a component of traditional incense blends. In many regions it is burned on charcoal either on its own or blended with other resins such as frankincense, myrrh, or damar to create layered aromatic compositions. Its naturally sweet fragrance makes it a valued base note in incense mixtures.

How To Use

Place a small piece of resin on a lit charcoal tablet in a heat-safe incense burner. As the resin warms, it gently melts and releases its characteristic balsamic aroma. For a slower release of fragrance, the resin can be placed on a small bed of ash or sand on top of the charcoal.
